Hi, all :D

Finally, we are done with Assignment 1 and Mr.Choy gave a lecture about "post-modernism".

So, what is 'post-modernism? In dictionary, it says : "of, relating to, or being any of various movements in reaction to modernism that are typically characterized by a return to traditional materials and forms or by ironic self-reference and absurdity."

Mr.Choy explained us about some key characteristics of postmodernism :

<Characteristics of postmodernism>

1. Postmodernism movements are diverse and disparate

2. Ironical and playful treatment of fragmented subject

3. breakdown of high and low culture hierarchies (postmodernism artist wanted to merge)

4. undermining of concepts of authenticity and originality.

Here is an example of performance and this artist shows how extreme postmodernism artists is.

Rhythm 0 (1974)

It was a six-hour work of performance art by Marina Abramović in Studio Morra. The work involved Abramović standing still while the audience was invited to do to her whatever they wished, using one of 72 objects she had placed on a table. These included a rose, feather, perfume, honey, bread, grapes, wine, scissors, a scalpel, nails, a metal bar, and a gun loaded with one bullet.

Other than that, Mr.Choy also taught us "Appropriation art" and "Decollage art".

Appropriation:

Repurposed objects or existing art, that with minimal transformation, subversively gives them new meaning and context.

Marilyn Monroe (1962) by Andy Warhol

This artwork is good example that shows appropriation.

Decollage :

- used to show tearing effect

-Images given new meaning by tearing or removal, started with a mashup of commercial posters and those underneath Bricolage Art technique where works are constructed from various available material ("found items” or mass-produced “ junk”)

A décollage by Wolf Vostell

This artwork is an example of 'decollage'

Overall, I feel like I learnt a lot about postmodernism and other arts such as appropriation and decollage. Hopefully, I wish I can get good feedback on my essay next week :(
