Hi, all :)
This week, I had a first lecture from Mr. Choy about one of art movement : modernism. Since contextual studies is about "meaning behind art, design or anything", he said that it's important to understand the background of it. Hence, in order to understand about modernism, we were to know the background of that era.
Mr. Choy started to explain background of modernism in Europe like what affected to begin modernism in Europe.
<Background of modernism in Europe>
Industrial revolution in the western world
-The most important changes in human history
-Changes in economy, society and culture
Other than industrial revolution, new social group members called "Bourgeoisie" also main background of modernism and many artists in 19-20th century got affected by those bourgeoisie.
Mr. Choy introduced an artist named 'Honore Daumier (1808-1879)'. He famously satirized France’s bourgeoisie and justice system, and masterfully exposed the misery of the masses through the emerging medium of lithography.
These are his famous artworks. First one second one shows life of commoners and last one is satirising political figures and the behaviour of the bourgeoisie in France society.
Through his artworks, I could manage to understand the atmosphere and life in 19-20th century and also, how the techniques of purpose can be achieved in his paintings.
Overall, our first lecture was okay so far and I got to learn more about modernism and life style of that era. Mostly, I realised that it's really important to research the background of interest in order to look for meaning behind and understand it better!
